Lakecraft is a grassroots volunteer project. The volunteers built an educational server hosting Minecraft whose goal is to as accurately as possible map the Lake Champlain Basin to help teach kids lessons based around the history of the basin. Some lessons are about Social Sciences regarding Abenaki survival sources and ways of life, sunken boats, and Earth Sciences regarding erosion patterns and the changing landscape of the basin over time. Students can interact with the basin and play through series of community based learning skills as well, as part of the server experience.
I worked with one of the developers to design a logo and brand for the project to separate it from the world of Minecraft. Our goal was to still provide that blocky solid structure from the Minecraft logo while softening the features and making it visually distinct to Lake Champlain.
The site design remains clean and easy to read and navigate. The most important function of the site is to provide information about the server and downloads of the resources. Utilizing white space and color blocking for separation, sections are concise and the necessary information is readily available to viewers.
